Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
