In texas hold’em, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the competitors put out a certain amount of cash. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the frequently used phrase for this play. In the next step, the croupier shuffles the cards and deals out two cards face down to each player. A regular deck of fifty two cards is used. After the deal, there is the first sequence of betting. This sequence is often referred to as a "pre-flop".

Following the first betting round, the first card is tossed aside. This discarded card is referred to as the "burn card", and this is performed to make sure that there is no dishonestly. The next three cards are then revealed face up on the poker table. These cards are ‘the flop’. Now comes a 2nd sequence of betting, after that the dealer throws away a further card and flips 1 more card onto the table. Following this, players can use the 6th card to create a five-card poker hand.

Another sequence of wagering follows, and in a number of styles of poker, here is where the wager size doubles. There is another round of burning a card, and a closing placing of a card face-up on the table. This is referred to as the "river". Gamblers can now use any of the 5 cards on the board, or the two cards in their hand, to form a five-card poker hand.

To wrap it up there’s a further round of betting. Then, all the players remaining start to reveal their hands. This is referred to as the "showdown". Obviously, the competitor who has the greatest hand wins. When players have equal hands a sharing of the pot is considered.
