Do you ever acquire that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the nearest gambling establishment, to discover a superior stakes game of Texas holdem, to sit at a Chemin de fer table for hours on end. I really like that itch. And I like to scratch it.
I also like to watch men and women wager. No two poker faces seem identical. When I wager I like to consider I put on a poker face that is impenetrable. Except I know I’ve certain personal habits. For one, the only time I smoke is when I wager on poker or Twenty-one. And then I smoke. Except I smoke whether or not I am winning or losing, whether or not I’ve a good hand or bad.
I once wagered within a weekly poker game. The casino game was always five card draw. There was a person who wagered with us just about every week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a good hand, subconsciously, he would start touching and betting with his hat. Needless to say, he never won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a player who made additional movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever met. He was impressive in the way he dressed. Generally an costly suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pant leg or holding his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to study him for hours. I would tried to see if I could notice his tell. Choosing fuzz off his vest- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a very short pile – did this mean he had a beneficial hand?
Years later I ran into him inside a bar in Boston and we had a beverage. I asked him if he have been aware of all those activities he produced or if they were unconscious. He told me that every individual thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is generally checking out everybody else’s poker face. They are trying to detect the the tell.
So his system was to give them lots to feel about. His thinking was if they have been thinking about him picking a piece of fuzz off his vest and what it meant they certain weren’t thinking about their cards.
His process was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a program that works for you.
