Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked playing different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently compete against each other. Howard had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
