Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and lose most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The definite improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
