Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and because you have many players battling for the high, and many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
