Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi-low starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an exciting array of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with a few trying for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi low.
