Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against each other. He had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
