Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease.
