Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his abilities began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
