Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. Omaha hi/lo begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough.
