Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only participant to make it to the final poker table in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Gus raked in a massive pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest players in the world. While gambling on internet poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. He often competes in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Hansen generally buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He waits patiently for a good hand and then goes all-in. I accept that Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has little or no reason to sit at the game with the minimum buy-in.
Buying in for the min takes a majority of the expertise out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the total dollar value. I think tv can alter our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players in the world could be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen wagering on net poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes Omaha and Holdem. Gus Hansen has shown himself as a competition player. Can he use his talents in cash rounds?
