Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few entrants can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and because you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
