Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and do not win most times. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.
The definite improvement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
