Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of wagering options and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
