Gus Hansen enjoyed a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve closing poker table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a large pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has earned many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the greatest bettors around the world. While wagering on web poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. Gus frequently competes in the 200/400 No Limit max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen usually buys-in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I know Hansen is a great poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is penniless, he has no reason to play at the game with the min buy in.
Playing for the min takes a majority of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total dollar value. I think television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The greatest poker players anywhere in the world may be guys you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be found playing internet poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in high stakes omaha/8 and hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in money rounds?
